Four Seasons, Not Forty Hats
The Core Four
- Cold-weather soft hat — merino beanie or watch cap
- Everyday brim or peak — tweed flat cap or mid-brim felt, depending on your style identity
- Sun hat — Panama, wide-brim straw, or technical UPF cap
- Wild-card / formal — the piece that earns its keep at weddings, races, funerals, or photos
Everything else is expansion pack.
Spring
March to May is argumentative weather. A packable technical cap or light felt handles showers; a cheapable cotton bucket covers festivals. Keep serious straw boxed until sustained sun arrives — early storms punish weave.
Outfit logic: Transitional jackets love caps; full winter parkas still want knits on truly bitter mornings.
Summer
Priorities: breathability, UPF, sweatband hygiene.
- Fine Panama for smart-casual days and garden parties
- Ventilated baseball or outdoor cap for errands
- Wide brim if you burn easily or spectate outdoors for hours

Autumn
Felt returns. Soft snaps on brims, richer colours, tweed textures. This is the season to wear the fedora or trilby you bought for "someday". Rain is frequent — dense felt or waxed cloth beats fashion straw.
Style note: Autumn is when hats photograph best against coats. Use Face Shapes if you are still deciding brim width.
Winter
Insulation and ear coverage win. Beanies under hoods, deep caps, occasional fur felt if you keep moving. Static ceremonial top hats are not commuting tools — store them.
Static electricity, wool fluff, and condensation from heated interiors are normal; brush and rest hats so they dry.

Start with navy, charcoal, natural straw, and olive. Add rust or forest only after the neutrals earn weekly wear. Loud crowns multiply outfit conflicts.

- May–June: Straw, before wedding-season markups bite hard
- September: Best felt restocks
- November: Do not panic-buy a first formal hat two days before an event without Sizing confidence
Maintenance Rhythm
End of each season: clean, brush, loose rest on forms or stuffed with acid-free tissue, away from radiators. Sweatband replacements in spring prevent summer odour drama.
