Why Hats Matter
A hat does more than cover your head. Throughout history, hats have signalled status, profession, religion, rebellion, and identity. A bowler hat in the City of London meant something different from a bowler hat in La Paz. A baseball cap worn backwards meant something in 1992 that it doesn't mean today.
Hats are practical too — protection from sun, rain, cold, and impact. They're the original wearable technology.
And yet, for much of the late 20th century, hats fell out of mainstream fashion. The car killed the hat — you can't wear a top hat in a Ford Focus. But hats are back, and they're more diverse than ever: wide-brimmed sun hats on festival stages, flat caps on farmers and fashion editors alike, beanies as year-round staples, and bucket hats making an improbable second comeback.
