Sun Protection
Skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. A hat is your first line of defence.
What to Look For
- UPF 50+ rating — blocks 98% of UV radiation
- Wide brim (7.5 cm / 3 inches minimum) — protects face, ears, and neck. The Cancer Council recommends 7.5 cm or wider
- Tight weave — hold the hat up to a light. If you can see through it, UV passes through it
- Dark colours absorb more UV than light colours (but are hotter to wear)
- Neck protection — a cape, flap, or extended back brim covers the neck (where melanoma often develops)

Rain Hat Tips
- Waxed cotton is the classic choice (Barbour's waxed hats are practically a uniform in the British countryside). Re-wax annually for best performance
- Gore-Tex caps and hats offer the best waterproof-breathable performance but look more "technical" than traditional
- A wide brim keeps rain off your neck and shoulders — critical for all-day outdoor exposure
- Traditional felt hats are naturally water-resistant — a good wool or fur felt will shed a moderate shower. They shouldn't be soaked, but short exposure is fine

Cold-Weather Hat Features
- Ear flaps: Essential below 0°C. Ears have minimal fat and are highly susceptible to frostbite
- Fleece or fur lining: Dramatically increases warmth. A fleece-lined wool beanie is approximately twice as warm as an unlined one
- Chin strap: Prevents the hat blowing off in wind (wind chill is the real enemy in winter)
- Moisture-wicking inner: Sweating under a hat in cold weather leads to chilling once you stop moving. Merino wool wicks better than cotton
