Hat Care Guide — Cleaning, Storage & Repair

How to clean, store, and maintain your hats. Care instructions for felt, straw, knit, and cotton hats to keep them looking their best for years.

Hat Care Guide

A good hat should last years — decades, even. But only with proper care. Different materials need different treatment. This guide covers cleaning, storage, reshaping, and repair for every common hat material.

General Rules (All Hats)

  1. Handle by the brim, not the crown. Repeatedly grabbing the crown weakens the material and can deform it
  2. Dry naturally. Never use a tumble dryer, radiator, or hairdryer on a hat. Heat warps shape and shrinks materials
  3. Store properly. More hats are ruined by bad storage than by wear
  4. Deal with issues quickly. A fresh stain is far easier to remove than a set one

Felt Hats (Fedoras, Bowlers, Trilbies, Pork Pies)

Daily Care

  • Brush after every few wears with a soft horsehair hat brush. Brush counter-clockwise (against the nap) then clockwise to smooth
  • Remove dust with a lint roller or soft cloth
  • If caught in rain, shake off excess water and let the hat dry naturally on a flat surface, crown up. Avoid direct heat

Cleaning

  • Surface marks: A slightly damp cloth, dabbed gently
  • Sweat stains on the sweatband: Wipe the interior band with a damp cloth and mild soap. For persistent stains, a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar on a cloth
  • Grease spots: Talcum powder or cornstarch. Apply generously, leave overnight, brush off
  • Deep cleaning: Professional hat cleaning is recommended for valuable felt hats. DIY deep cleaning risks warping

Reshaping

Felt hats can be reshaped with steam:

  1. Boil a kettle or use a garment steamer
  2. Hold the hat 15–20 cm above the steam for 15–30 seconds (rotate to steam evenly)
  3. Gently reshape with your hands while the felt is warm and pliable
  4. Allow to dry completely in the desired shape

Storage

  • Store on a hat stand, hat rack, or upside down on the crown (stuffed lightly with tissue to maintain shape)
  • Keep away from direct sunlight (fades colour)
  • In a hatbox for long-term storage, with acid-free tissue paper
  • Never stack heavy items on top of felt hats

Straw Hats (Panamas, Boaters, Sun Hats)

Daily Care

  • Brush lightly with a soft-bristled brush to remove dust
  • After wearing in humidity, allow to dry on a flat surface before storing
  • Handle by the brim — straw crowns dent easily

Cleaning

  • Dust/surface dirt: Soft brush or slightly damp cloth
  • Stains: A paste of lemon juice and salt applied gently, then wiped off with a damp cloth. Allow to dry naturally
  • Yellowing (natural straw): Some yellowing is natural ageing. To refresh, very lightly wipe with a cloth dampened in cold water with a splash of hydrogen peroxide (test on an inconspicuous area first)
  • Sweatband: Same as felt — damp cloth with mild soap

Reshaping

Straw hats can be reshaped with steam, similar to felt, but more carefully:

  • Less steam needed — straw becomes pliable quickly
  • Cheap straw hats may not recover from significant damage
  • Quality toquilla straw (Panama) is remarkably resilient — a good Panama can be gently rolled for travel and it will spring back

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place on a stand or flat surface
  • Stuff the crown with tissue paper
  • A hatbox is ideal for off-season storage
  • Avoid: Leaving straw hats in a hot car (warps irreversibly), extreme dry conditions (cracks), or humid closed spaces (mould)

Knit Hats (Beanies, Watch Caps)

Cleaning

  • Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent or wool wash. Gently squeeze — never wring
  • Machine wash only if the label says so, in a mesh bag, cold cycle, gentle spin
  • Cashmere and merino: Always hand wash. Lay flat to dry on a towel, reshaped
  • Acrylic: More robust — machine washable for most

Drying

  • Always flat dry. Hanging a wet knit hat stretches it out permanently
  • Reshape while damp, lay on a clean towel, and allow to air dry
  • Never tumble dry wool or cashmere (they shrink dramatically)

Storage

  • Fold flat in a drawer or on a shelf. Knit hats don't need hat stands
  • If storing with other woollens, use cedar or lavender sachets to deter moths
  • Pilling: Use a fabric shaver or pilling comb to remove pills from knit hats. This is maintenance, not damage

Cotton and Canvas Hats (Bucket Hats, Baseball Caps)

Cleaning

  • Most cotton hats are hand-washable. Cool water, mild detergent, gentle scrubbing with a soft brush
  • Baseball caps: DO NOT put them in the dishwasher (a common internet myth). Hand wash in a basin, reshape while damp, and air dry on a rounded form (a bowl works well)
  • Canvas/waxed cotton: Wipe with a damp cloth. Barbour-style waxed hats should be re-waxed periodically (Barbour sells reproofing wax)
  • Sweat stains on caps: Soak the sweatband area in cool water with OxiClean or baking soda for 30 minutes, then gently scrub

Drying

  • Air dry only. Stuff with tissue or place over a round form to maintain shape
  • Baseball caps dry best on a hat form or placed over an upturned bowl or coffee can
  • Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods (fades colours)

Storage

  • Flat or on a hook/peg. Baseball caps can be stored on a wall-mounted rack
  • Don't stack heavy items on cotton hats — they compress and lose shape

Leather Hats

Cleaning

  • Wipe with a damp cloth
  • For dirt and grime, use a leather-specific cleaner (saddle soap or leather wipes)
  • Condition periodically with leather conditioner to maintain suppleness

Water Damage

  • If soaked, allow to dry naturally at room temperature. Never use heat
  • Reshape while damp if needed
  • Once dry, condition with leather balm

Storage

  • On a hat stand or stuffed with tissue
  • Keep away from heat sources (which dry and crack leather)
  • In a breathable (not plastic) box for long-term storage

When to Seek Professional Help

ProblemDIY?Professional?
Light surface stain
Sweatband odour
Minor reshaping✓ (steam)
Set-in stain on felt
Significant warping
Moth damage✓ (restoration)
Torn brim or crown
Vintage hat restoration
Re-blocking (reshaping to original form)
Sweatband replacement

Hat specialists and milliners can work wonders. A professional cleaning and re-blocking can transform a neglected vintage hat.

Storage Setup for a Collection

If you have more than a few hats:

  • Hat stands for daily-wear rotation (keeps shape, allows air circulation)
  • Hatboxes (acid-free, breathable) for seasonal or special-occasion hats
  • Wall hooks or pegs for casual caps and flat caps
  • Cedar blocks in any enclosed storage to deter moths and absorb moisture
  • Avoid: Attics (too hot), basements (too damp), and direct sunlight (fades)
  • Rotate your hats. Wearing the same hat every day without rest accelerates wear
